I'm a worrier.  It's true.  I think most people tend towards either anxiety or depression as they get stressed - a sort of hyperactivity versus an immobility.  I'm certainly the former.  Part of how I cope with being busy, and an outlet for my hyperactivity, is to make lists of all the things I have to do.

But this sometimes serves to stress me out as often as it de-stresses me.

today I was first assist on a below-the-knee amputation on an older man with diabetes.  It's a pretty brutal operation - as in, they actually use an actual bone saw, a very large knife and it's less possible than I thought it would be to precisely cut off the muscle in someone's leg.

I'm introduced to my first preceptor, a surgical oncologist who we'll call Ted.  Ted spent most of his life in Texas (and has a thick southern drawl to prove it) before he became a surgical chief and a Colonel in the Marine Corps for many years before going into private practice.  So the first thing I have to figure out is do I call him Doctor or Colonel or both.

I have found re-discovered my love for novels (or maybe just rediscovered how to create time to enjoy them ??) since classes have ended and clerkships have begun. the latest of my mom's wisdom:  so you know when you see a stick caught in between some rocks in a too-low creek or a tide pool, how the urge is to kick the rocks or kick the stick to free it, but really all it needs to get unstuck is more water, higher tides.
